János Endreffy, sen. (1848-1938)

Born 9. February, 1848. Graduated at the Lutheran Theology in Bratislava, then he studied a year at the Jena University. He served in Békéscsaba as teacher, then in Tótkomlós, Pilis, Csomád, Fót, Domony. On 1. February 1888 he came to Felsőszeli as pastor. His wife, Anna Tepliczky, born in Bártfa. Their children: Eugeny and Elisabeth (1889), Wilma (1890), John (1891).
The renovation of the church was carried out in the time of János Endreffy, sen., as well as the vicarage, the teacher's house, even the school could be enlarged with one classroom.
His writings were published in the ecclesiastic press, resp. in 1899 his booklet, entitled ?Pentecost memories? was issued, containing sermons. A pamphlet entitled ?Sermon on the Reformation? came out in Losonc, 1903. Nevertheless, his most significant work is the ?Data to the History of the Lutheran Congregation at Felsőszeli?, having been published in 1910, Galánta. He retired in 1911 and moved to Budapest. Endreffy, sen. came back to the village, when his son János obtained the pastor's appointment. After this time, he devoted himself mostly to writing: More than 100 articles were published in the paper ?Evangélikus Lap? (1922-1938), resp. he is writing his plays on Biblical topics. The most wellknown was ?The oath of Jefte? (1923) which was played all over the country by non-professionals. Other plays: ?Manasshe? (1924), ?Bileam? (1925), ?John the Baptist? (1930), ?King Kálmán Könyves? and the ?Religious Scenes?...
János Endreffy, sen. died 26. April 1938, when he was ninety. His grave is in the cemetery between the pastors Pál Farkas and Mihály Leskó, which are carefully tended by the people of Szeli.
