Felsőszeli (Horné Saliby)

János Endreffy, sen. (1848-1938)

Felsőszeli is to be found on the so called ?Mátyusföld?, today the district Galánta. The first written mention originates from 1158, the time of king Géza II. King Lajos II. gave a patent to the village in 1523, but this remained unutilized, probably because of the Turkish expansion.

The Lutheran church of Felsőszeli was one of the first chuches of the Reformation, being formed under the protection of the Protestant family Thurzó. They rebuilt the old Catholic church for use of the Lutherans, too. But in time of the counter-reformation, when the Catholic Eszterházy family became the owner of the village, the church was also taken back. Hard times came then. The situation of the Lutheran believers changed only after the Edict of Tolerance of king József II. (1781), when they built their own chapel, with entrance through the church garden and without a tower. It was consecrated 11. August 1790. It was functioning in this form till 1856l, when it was partially pulled down to give place to the new church, existing even nowadays. The consecration was 24. September 1861, on Michaelmas, in the presence of bishop Geduly.

The first known pastor of the congregation was János Viszkidenszky, being on service between 1785-1797. In the same time there also exists the Lutheran school, where János Vidarény had been the schoolmaster. Unfortunately a record of further events cannot be found. Ministers of the congregation are: Pál Farkas (1829-1832), Gábor Molnár (1833-1879), Mihály Leskó (1879-1888), János Szilárd, János Endreffy, sen. (1888-1911), br. Pál Podmaniczky, János Endreffy, jun. (1918-1938), István Mátis (1939-1945), being expelled of the newly formed state, Czechoslovakia. Ján Holcik (1947-1958). Michal Francisty (1958-1971), Ludovít Juretic (1971-1982), Ludovít Kovác (1982-1999). The present pastor is Zuzsanna Tóth, being the fifth pastor of the bilingual congregation. According to the census of 1993, 70% of the inhabitants of Felőszeli is of Hungarian nationality. With her 1179 Lutherans, Felsőszeli is the largest congregation of West-Slovakia, regarding the number of her members.
