The arms of Komarno

The northern part of the town is the gate of South-Slovakia. The Slovak name is Komarno, but is called also Révkomárom, or Öreg-Komárom, too. The part, south of the Danube, belonging to Hungary is called Komárom, being an important highway and railway border station.

An earthwork was found here by the conquering Hungarians, the building of which having been continued. This was the birthplace of the Hungrian king, László V., a beloved town of king Matthias, where his wife Beatrix mourned him. The Lutheran and Calvinist branches of the Reformation kept spreading very quickly, where Gál Huszár was the reformer of the town. Even the counter-reformation could not break the insistence of the Hungarians on Calvinism. The banishment and dragging off for galley-slavery of the pastors was an everyday event, János Száky was burnt on the main square. The inhabitants were decimated by wars, epidemies and demolishing earthquakes during their stormy history, and the town was ruined. The northern part of the town became part of the Czechoslovak state, in consequence of the Trianon peace-treaty.

After the establishment of the second Slovak Republic, she became one of the most important centres of the intellectual and cultural life of the Hungarians in Slovakia. The János Selye University with Hungarian instruction language, instituted in 2004, and the Jókai Theatre are functioning in the town Komarno.
